In this book, Chesterton replies to H. G. Wells’ argument for historical and scientific materialism. Wells considered Jesus Christ no more than a remarkable person, but Chesterton finds that a merely remarkable person could never have had such a wide- sweeping influence on people’s lives as the centuries passed. Chesterton could only conclude that something more than nature was at work in history.
